Strength Evaluation of Composites with Sharp-Pointed Inclusions

Fracture of Composite Materials

Abstract

Fracture mechanics principles have been applied to composites with heterogeneous, sharp-pointed (with cusps on the contour), rigid, non-interacting inclusions contained in an infinite isotropic matrix under conditions of plane and anti-plane strain. An algorithm has been developed to calculate the stress intensity factors k1, k2 and k3 near the tips of the arbitrary inclusions. The algorithm has been obtained on the basis of the modified boundary shape disturbance method. Some particular cases are given to illustrate the effect of the inclusion material rigidity, the defect shape and the external load type on the local stress distribution and ideal bonding seal conditions at the media interface. The possibility and range of application of conventional fracture mechanics criteria to the strength evaluation of composites containing defects have been studied.
