Stress Singularities in Laminated Composites

  • Conference paper

Abstract

The singular nature of the stress distribution near the free edge of an interface in a laminated composite is analyzed by using the method originally due to Stroh for solving dislocation problems. With this approach, the degenerate case of uncoupling between the displacement components U3 and u1, u2 presents no difficulties in finding the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the elasticity constants. Numerical examples are presented for the order of singularity at the interface of an angle-ply graphite/epoxy laminated composite in which each layer is assumed to be orthotropic material with the direction of the fibers inclined at various angles θ with the x3-axis.
