Movement of Leukocytes in Flowing Blood
The fact that leukocytes adhere to the intraluminal surface of blood vessels has long been noted as a point of interest, yet the physiological significance of this event remains undetermined. Although the microscopic observations in vivo of these interesting cells to date has been rewarding, leukocyte behavior in the living animal needs further study. There are three major aspects of leukocyte behavior that can be investigated in this manner; first, the adherence of leukocytes to the endothelial lining of vessels, second the motility of the cells both inside and outside the vessels, and third, the hemodynamic forces which affect both the adherence and the movement of the cells.
