Abstract
Future transportation demand cannot be forecast without first analyzing the present demand for transportation services. Present demand is analyzed in order to understand relationships between spatial distribution of resources, population, and socioeconomic activites. These relationships can then be utilized to forecast future demand for transportation services. The first task will be to define a system of zones so as to facilitate the analysis. This process implies several trade-offs (e.g. simplicity versus errors of aggregation) and should be treated carefully.
