Development of Infants Surviving Intrauterine Transfusions

  • Chapter
Paediatrics and Blood Transfusion

Part of the book series: Developments in Hematology and Immunology ((DIHI,volume 2))

Abstract

The long term effects of intrauterine transfusions (IUT) on growth and development of children who were severely affected by Rhesus (Rh) incompatibility are still of interest. In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University Hospital of Leiden, IUTs were started in 1965. Six years later we reported in the Dutch literature our findings on the growth and development of 13 surviving patients.2 Our data were presented in relation to published data then available (Table I). These results are in close agreement with those in a more recent publication of Hardyment et al, 1979,1 who presented their own series of 21 patients, together with other reports on the follow up of surviving children after IUT (Table II).
