Abstract
A sense of insecurity is commonly experienced by the doctor assessing a child with suspected congenital heart disease (CHD). Such anxiety is unnecessary. Although the subject is one of great complexity for the paediatric cardiologist and cardiac surgeon, the rules for safe practice in primary care are straightforward and the knowledge and skills required for a competent first assessment by no means overwhelming.
