Abstract
An environment is generally defined as those influences on a system’s performance that can safely be assumed to be outside the operator’s control. It is also assumed that the output of the system has no effect on the environment. Three classes of environmental influences can be identified; namely, the physical environment, the economic environment and the social environment. Each of these classes are systems in themselves and are characterised by interdependence and interaction.
