Abstract
This is a disease which does not spare children and affects about one child in a thousand. It can develop at any age but there tend to be peaks of incidence, the first being at about 5–6 years and the other at puberty. The first peak raises the question of the role of viral illnesses in the aetiology and the second peak the effect of puberty. Childhood diabetes is invariably insulin dependent.
