Abstract

As we conclude an intensive week of exhange, I am encouraged by the dedication with which you have addressed the tasks of evaluating the complexities of freshwater periphytic communities. Although I still feel that reseach on periphyton has somewhat stagnated, I sense an infusion of enthusiasm, even optimism by the collective expertise of this workshop. We all recognize that optimism does not emerge easily. We have sufficient experience to appreciate the enormous problems facing us in the extreme heterogeneity and complexity of periphytic communities.
