Abstract

Many lagoons occur around Lake Biwa and some of these lagoons are extensively eutrophicated because of influx of the domestic waste water and cultivated field runoff. Phragmites communis grows abundantly and it occupies vast areas in these lagoons. The denitrifying activity of epiphytic microorganisms colonized on P. communis and artificial substrata was examined using the Giltmy medium. For 20 days’ incubation, nitrite and nitrate were actively reduced by epiphytes. Most of the epiphytes colonized on different kinds of macrophytes or collected from various lagoons showed active denitrification. The denitrifying activity of epiphytes can be very effective in nitrogen removal in the eutrophicated lagoons.
