Abstract

Ever since molecular species have been discovered in space in the late 30’s and early 40’s by the optical identification of CH, CH+ and CN in absorption towards nearby hot stars, the question of molecule formation has accompanied the observational efforts. These early discoveries by Adams, Dunham, Swings, Rosenfeld and McKellar are separated by a gap of 28 years from the radio-discovery of the first polyatomic molecule ( ammonia, NH3 ) in interstellar space by Townes and collaborators.
