Abstract
The plurifacial Paleozoic metamorphism of France comprises four main phases which succeeded to one another under regularly decreasing pressure conditions. The first High Pressure phase, mostly Silurian or Ordovician, followed a Lower Paleozoic disten-sional period. The second phase, Devonian, is correlated with the first tectonic culmination ; it is an Intermediate Pressure one with kyanite and staurolite as index minerals. Nearly so is the third Lower Carboniferous phase. The fourth phase, of Upper Carboniferous age, resulted of the final continental collision ; it is a Low Pressure one.
This synthetic and very general work was elaborated by the whole French “Metamorphism” Groupe and is based upon recent, sometimes unpublished, datas gathered by A. Beugnies (Belgium) for the Ardennes Massif ; C. Audren, B. Cabanis, J. Chantraine, J.R. Darboux, P. Jegouzo, J. Le Métour, J. Marchand, S. Paradis, J. Rolet, J.P. Sagon, M. Ters, C. Triboulet and R.
