Abstract

The British Caledonides fall naturally into two belts. The northern belt comprises middle Proterozoic to Middle Cambrian metasediments which have been subjected to the tectonothermal events of the Grampian orogeny (c. 490 Ma). The metamorphic grade of the rocks rises rapidly from the margins of the belt through the greenschist facies to the amphibolite facies. The southern belt comprises metasediments of Ordovician to late-Silurian age. They have been weakly metamorphosed during the late-Silurian.
