Abstract

During the two-day workshop in Fredericton, August 1983, representatives from national working groups on Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Faunal Province prepared a series of charts depicting characteristic lithologies for each series from Late Precambrian to Devonian for the presently disrupted orogen. Those contributing to the charts were David L. Bruton, Gilbert Kelling, Jean-Paul Lecorche, S. R. McCutcheon, W. S. McKerrow, R. B. Neuman, Alain Pique, Paul Schenk, John Rodgers and Joel Rolet. Information was drawn from memory and consequently may well be incomplete, inaccurate, and poorly balanced. However, this was done in the spirit of the conference, at which presentations were to be formulated for the sessions on site and on the basis of compilation maps and informed discussion by international authorities. During the subsequent colloquium of specialists in related fields, selected individuals described particular regions within the orogen. The latter included: (1) a western region conceived as the western margin of the Iapetus Ocean; (2) a central region crudely representing a volcanic-arc belt; (3) an eastern region representing the Avalon terrane of North America including the cratonal cover of France and Iberia; (4) the Meguma terrane of southern Nova Scotia, and apparently similar terranes in the southern United States; and (5) the cratonal cover of northwestern Africa.
