Abstract

A geophysical study group within IGCP Project 27 “The Caledonide Orogen” was informally organized in 1978. Its initial objective was to foster the compilation of geophysical data within individual countries on a common scale so that international compilations and correlations between separate elements of the orogen might be possible. Initially, data were most readily available for the Appalachian, Caledonide and Hercynian orogens so that compilations of magnetic and gravity data have been produced (1,2) and their results interpreted (3,4). From these beginnings more recent work has concentrated on compiling new data for the Caledonides and the Mauritanides, so that correlation can be extended over greater distances, and so that the correlations suggested by potential field data can be evaluated in the light of other geological and geophysical data. The geophysical session of the NATO/IGCP meeting in Fredericton, Canada in August 1982 concentrated primarily on newer aspects of the work of the study ground, including an introduction to the difficulties in deciding the reliability of paleomagnetic results.
