Abstract

Although 1450 planetary nebulae are known in our galaxy, less than one hundred are large enough and bright enough to be well studied. However photographs are not the ideal means of quantitative study of the nebulae since plates are non-linear and therefore very difficult to calibrate them accurately. In recent years various linear detector systems have been developed, and some of the results obtained by using these detectors will be illustrated here. The studies described are still in their infancy: the knowledge derived is not yet sufficient to extrapolate back to a very early stage in the development of a nebula.
