New Wrinkles on DNA

Nucleic Acids: The Vectors of Life

Abstract

The B allomorph of poly d(GC):poly d(GC) at first sight appears to be quite similar to that of calf thymus DNA whose identical chains are described adequately as 101 helices of (average) mononucleotides. Nevertheless the chains of poly d(GC):poly d(GC) are significantly better described as 51 helices of dinucleotides in which GpC has more or less the same conformation as common B DNA but CpG has its C3’-03’ conformation gauche minus rather than trans. Consequently the phosphate orientations of alternate nucleotides differ dramatically justifying describing the conformation of this molecule as a wrinkled form of B DNA.
