Meteoric Ionization

  • Chapter
Physics of Meteoric Phenomena

Part of the book series: Geophysics and Astrophysics Monographs ((GAAM,volume 22))

Abstract

Meteoric and atmospheric atoms and molecules become excited and ionized during inelastic collisions between the vaporizing atoms of a meteoroid and air molecules and atoms. As a result, an ion trail forms along the path of the meteor, or, more precisely, an ion-electron trail, because it contains both ions and electrons, the trail as a whole being quasi-neutral.
