Abstract

Two recent 21cm surveys with the Parkes 18m and 65m telescopes are discussed, together with a new compilation of high-resolution 21cm data right around the galactic plane. The most clearcut results are for the outer Galaxy, where the Parkes 18m and Hat Creek 26m surveys have been used to study the distribution of HI based on a circular rotation model. The surface density distribution is discussed, and also the warping and the thickness of the HI layer. The total mass of HI in the Galaxy is found to be 4.8 × 109 M.

Time will not permit an overall review of the large-scale structure of atomic hydrogen. Also, the results of the other recent study (by Kulkarni, Blitz, and Heiles) are being discussed separately. This paper will therefore concentrate on the recent work of the Maryland group.
