Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 104))

Abstract

This chapter deals with the theory of the earth’s inner and middle magnetosphere. With regard to the day side of the magnetosphere, we consider the region earthward and equatorward of the magnetopause and its associated boundary layers. With regard to the nightside, we consider the inner part of the plasma sheet, specifically, the part that lies on closed magnetic field lines that experience only flows that are slow compared to the fast-mode speed. Excluded from consideration are all X-lines and magnetopause boundary layers, including the polar cusp, mantle, and tail lobe. Figure 1 indicates, in a rough, qualitative way, the extent of the region being discussed.
