Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 104))

Abstract

The flow of the solar wind past the earth with its magnetic dipole field and its ionosphere gives rise to a complex configuration of plasmas and magnetic fields. This chapter surveys the principal large- scale structures associated with the interaction between the solar wind and the earth, introduces the various terms by which they are known, and sketches their physical properties and their theoretical interpretation if there is a widely accepted one.
