Abstract

Oxidation state is the variable exerting the largest influence on nuclear shielding of transition metal atoms. Sensitivity measured in dδ/d(oxidation state) units is linear for a given atom and undergoes modest increases from left to right and from top to bottom within the transition metal rectangle. The sensitivity for 59Co is anomalously high. The incidence of inverse halogen dependence is traced and attributed to the sign of the spin-orbit coupling constant. The σP = 0 standard state for absolute shielding of 59Co is located using the extrapolation technique.
