Finalization Revisited

Finalization in Science

Part of the book series: Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science ((BSPS,volume 77))

Abstract

The finalization thesis postulates that in the course of its development a science (discipline, or field of knowledge) reaches a state of maturity as a result of which it can be said to have completed its work. The fundamental problems of a discipline are resolved when a general theory for its subject matter is formulated. Based on such a theory the discipline can proceed to tackle a large number of new problems. However, no internal criteria of scientific progress are provided which might enable a rational choice to be made between these problems.
