Kinematics of Molecular Clouds: Evidence for Agglomeration in Spiral Arms

Abstract

A new survey of CO in the first Galactic quadrant has been analyzed to yield a catalog of 320 molecular clouds near the tangent velocity. These clouds have known distances, so that cloud sizes and heights above the Galactic plane can be determined. The largest clouds (MC >105.5 M) have a reduced scaleheight relative to smaller clouds by an amount which is consistent with equipartition of energy. This can be interpreted as evidence for small clouds combining to form giant clouds in spiral arms.
