Abstract

Recent 21cm surveys with the Parkes 18m and 65m telescopes are discussed, together with a new compilation of 21cm data right around the galactic plane. The Parkes 18m and Hat Creek 26m surveys have been used to study the distribution of HI in the outer Galaxy based on a circular rotation model. The surface density distribution is discussed, and also the warping and the thickness of the HI layer. The total mass of HI in the Galaxy is found to be 4.8 × 109 M.
