Abstract

Seismicity and seismic hazard are considered for different sectors of the North Sea basin. The NE sector (Norway) seems to be 3 times more hazardous than the W sector (UK) and 5 times more than the SE sector (Netherlands). Also inside the three sectors important differences occur. Risk evaluation, therefore, should be made for each sector or sub-sector separately.

The maximum credible earthquake in the region is found to be of the order of magnitude 61. Results for the Eastern USA should not be used indiscriminately for W. European shelf regions because of vast differences in activity between the areas during the past 300 years.
