Abstract

Differences between offshore and onshore earthquake engineering which must taken into account in the design, are caused by the presence of water which changes the dynamic behaviour of structures, introduces new environmental loads and complicates soil investigation and visual site inspection. Furthermore, the structures offshore may be much larger than most onshore facilities. Other environmental loads such as current, sea waves and ice may act simultaneously with an earthquake. This paper discusses problems encountered offshore compared to onshore, and outlines some of the special considerations necessary in aseismic design of structures in the North Sea.
