Part of the book series: Synthese Language Library ((SLAP,volume 19))

Abstract

Infinitival complements are considered to be incomplete by most of the modern linguists who account for them in their theories, in almost the same sense as atomic structures with fewer negative than positive elements are considered to be incomplete by chemists. Unlike these atomic structures, however, infinitival constructions containing less arguments than might be expected on the base of the infinitival’s ‘degree’, are not necessarily unstable and seeking fulfilment from outside.
