Abstract
Rainfall rates over the tropical Atlantic (GATE-B oceanic area) on five days have been calculated from thermal radiation data received from the Earth-atmosphere system using a microwave radiometer on board the Nimbus 5 satellite. These rainfall rates were compared with rainfall rates calculated from radar data for the same days. Reasons for the differences revealed are discussed.
