Basilar Membrane Properties and Cochlear Response

Abstract

A WKB solution for a simplified analytical model of a guinea pig cochlea was used to investigate the effect of basilar membrane (BM) mass and orthotropy on response. The conclusion is reaffirmed that a physiological value of BM mass has little effect. The degree of orthotropy has no effect on peak location, but increases the subsequent decay of amplitude. The BM stiffness is highly dependent on the microstructure, particularly the fiber density. With such anatomical detail the localization can be estimated which agrees with direct measurement.
