Abstract

An understanding of the term sludge age involves consideration of a large number of process characteristics and indeed the expression is itself not always clearly specified. There are two broad areas of interest in connection with the effects of age on sludge characteristics and behaviour, namely, sludge age and its effects on biological treatment processes; and storage time as it affects the properties of organic sludges. In both of these areas the time element has significant effects on process performance and product characteristics but in rather different ways.
