Calculation of Phase Equilibria in Systems Based on Si3 N4

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 65))

Abstract

The preparation and application of Si3N4 ceramics requires the knowledge of phase equilibria. Since within these phase equilibria the vapour atmosphere plays an important role and since some of the condensed components tend to reach equilibrium in a very sluggish manner the use of thermodynamic calculations seems promising in guidance and completion of experimental phase equilibria studies. This paper shall conclude the present state of the art that has been derived and explained in several consecutive papers (1–4).
