The Kinetics of Gas-Solid Reactions and Environmental Degradation of Nitrogen Ceramics

  • Chapter
Progress in Nitrogen Ceramics

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSE,volume 65))

Abstract

Nitrides are thermodynamically less stable than oxides and are thus expected to oxidize in the usual oxygen-containing atmospheres such as air, steam, or carbon dioxide. Predicting the environmental degradation of nitrogen ceramics at high temperature is therefore a kinetic problem that falls within the scope of general kinetics of gas-solid reactions.
