Abstract

Liquid phase sintering is a process widely used for production of ceramic and metal parts. The technical empiricisms for application have been known for many years, nevertheless the mechanisms involved in liquid phase sintering are still not completely understood. This paper will try to combine the classical basic ideas on the liquid phase sintering mechanisms with the more recent experimental observations of the last few years. A general statement upon the effective densification phenomena, rearrangement and centre to centre approach of particles will be succeeded by a more detailed description of the mechanisms causing both phenomena. In a final part the contribution of these mechanisms on the densification phenomena of Si3N4 ceramics will be discussed, in conscience of the high complexity of Si3N4 ceramic systems.
