Nitrogen Ceramics 1976–1981

Abstract

It is both a great pleasure and a special honor to have been asked by Dr. Riley to present the introductory lecture for this second NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Nitrogen Ceramics. I must add that it is also a rather awesome responsibility, as the introductory lecture should, ideally, provide the perspective from which one can fit what is to follow during the course of the Institute into the main streams of development in nitrogen ceramics, in particular, and into the broader field of high performance ceramics, in general.
