Efficiency of nitrogen utilization and photosynthetic rate in C3 and C4 plants

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Developments in Plant and Soil Sciences ((DPSS,volume 8))

Abstract

It was postulated by the theoretical studies of Brown1,3 that, due to specific metabolism in C3 and C4 plants, the latter utilize nitrogen more efficiently than C3. According to these authors, such efficiency is primarily the result of a decrease in RuDP-carboxylase content in C4 plants. Since this enzyme may contain as much as 50% of total nitrogen9, nitrogen concentration in C4 plants must be lower than that of C3.
