Abstract
Nitrate reductase plays a major role in regulating nitrogen metabolism2 and its activity can be related to the yield capacity of the crop3,7. According to data reported before12,14 there is a competition between chlorate and nitrate for the same enzyme. The behaviour of chlorate suggests that chlorate and nitrate are transported by the same carrier system6. It is assumed that a direct effect of chlorate on the membranes cannot be excluded6. This paper deals with a study on the effect of chlorate ions on the plant height, weight of root system, and water content in roots of different genotypes of maize.
