Sudden Twisting of Partially Bonded Cylindrical Rods

Abstract

This study is concerned with the axially-symmetric transient problem of a torque applied suddenly to the end of a composite consisting of two concentric partially bonded cylinders. The cylinders are assumed to be perfectly bonded along their contact surface except for a cylindrical crack emanating from the horizontal boundary. The dynamic stress field at the periphery of the crack is found to possess the same essential features as other singular problems in LEFM. Of particular interest is the magnitude of the overshoot in the dynamic stress-intensity factor compared to the corresponding static value and the time interval in which it occurs. This has been displayed graphically for several composites made of different elastic materials.
