Abstract
An adequate and complete description of water relations of higher plants at the tissue and organ level requires reliable data of the water relations at the cellular level. An understanding of cell water relations is a necessary prerequisite for characterizing the hydraulic resistances to water transport in the different pathways in tissues, i.e., in the apoplasmic, symplasmic and transcellular (cell-to-cell) pathways. Furthermore, the driving forces for the transport across the tissue have to be known.
