The Influence of Water Stress on Photosynthesis in a Barley Crop

  • Chapter
Effects of Stress on Photosynthesis

Part of the book series: Advances in Agricultural Biotechnology ((AABI,volume 3))

Abstract

Photosynthesis rates of individual leaves and ears were measured over a range of light intensities and CO2 concentrations in a study of drought effects on the growth of a spring barley crop in the field. The effects of stress treatment and other environmental factors on the parameter values in fitted photosynthesis models are evaluated. The quantum efficiency of leaves declined at temperatures above 25°C; mesophyll conductance decreased with leaf age, and the decrease occurred earlier under water stress. For ears, quantum efficiency was affected by both pre- and post-anthesis stress.
