Abstract
Water supply systems are commonly planned, designed, constructed, and operated to provide a firm yield each year. The firm yield or the safe yield is the amount of water available from the water supply project every year including those years of a critically dry period. The critically dry period may or may not be the most severe drought of record. Nevertheless the intent is to supply a certain amount of water from the project over a long period of years regardless of the hydrologic conditions existing during those years.
