Abstract
Mr. Chairman, honored guests, and workshop participants, as the representative of the U.S. EPA and one of the co-sponsors of this International Workshop, I would like to extend a welcome to all the participants, to what I believe to be a most important and timely topic of environmental research. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation and thanks to Professor Stein, his staff, to Dr. Egan and to Professors Lewis and Nürnberg for the thorough planning that has gone into this workshop. Thanks are also extended to the other co-sponsors of this workshop as well as to our gracious hosts at the University of Saarland.
