Abstract
Radiopharmaceuticals exert no pharmacological action on the tissues of the host organism not even in the case of therapeutic agents where the therapeutic effect is achieved as the result of radiation induced damage. Diagnostic reagents tend to follow well defined metabolic pathways in the body or they are passively transported unchanged as the result of physiological activity and the movement of body fluids. In either case the biodistribution reflects physiological activity and a divergence from normal distribution patterns will indicate the presence of pathophysiological processes. This assumption forms the whole basis of in vivo nuclear medical diagnosis.
