Abstract

For assessing the safety of a radiopharmaceutical, the radiation exposure of the patient is one of the required parameters. In general, the exposure can only be estimated by initially referring to biokinetic data from investigations in animals and subsequently using available data from man. Mean organ doses are calculated in most instances, but effective doses and local tissue doses may be of considerable importance as well. The quantities needed and methods used for dose calculations are given in this review together with some results. The relevance of these data in assessing the safety of a radiopharmaceutical will be discussed.
