Abstract
Discussion of animal welfare in recent years has tended too much towards complying with the newly adopted animal protection laws and their measures of execution. The function of animal welfare research aimed towards defining minimum requirements for legal control should be considered to be of a subordinate nature. Rather, primary research strategy should focus on animal welfare as one component of animal production systems aimed towards optimizing the animal’s biological efficiency by improving its welfare within a given or modified production environment. Thus, the question should not be to identify production traits as indicators of animal welfare but, rather, to identify those parameters of welfare that can provide the basis for ensuring performance stability at a high production level and intensity.
