Abstract

The lively discussion that followed the contributions showed clearly the general interest and relevance of ethological indicators to assess the welfare of animals. Of particular interest were the observations and the questions concerning the technique of operative conditioning by which the animals can determine the environmental conditions that they “prefer”. With respect to the interesting fact that the light seeking behaviour of calves is not connected to a circadian rhythm, it was suggested that the motivation inducing it might be indirect. Light may offer to the animal the possibility of satisfying the need for social stimuli and interactions.
