Abstract
Over the last two years in the United States interest in high frequency ventilation (HFV) has surged. The technique is not really new, having been introduced in Sweden almost fifteen years ago. The original idea was to provide adequate oxygenation and alveolar ventilation during rigid bronchoscopy and laryngeal surgery. Sjostrand and his colleagues generated frequencies of 60 to 120 positive pressure breaths per minute.
