Abstract

Fibre spinning is a process in which an extruded liquid polymer filament is continuously drawn and simultaneously solidified to form a continuous synthetic fibre. There are three fundamental processes for the manufacture of synthetic fibres: melt spinning, wet spinning, and dry spinning. Melt spinning is restricted to polymers that are thermally stable above the melting temperature, and solidification is effected by cooling to below the glass transition temperature during drawing. In wet and dry spinning the liquid filament is extruded as a solution, and the solvent is removed and solidification effected in a coagulation bath or by evaporation to a hot gas, respectively. Polymer fibre drawing processes are discussed in detail in the monograph by Ziabicki (1976), and recent literature on the mechanics is reviewed by Denn (1980a) and White (1982).
