Abstract

Computers have three principal roles in polymer moulding processes. The first is control of the moulding cycle (see Chapter 9 and also, for example, Parnaby et al., 1978), the second is numerical machining of the mould network and the third is computer-aided design of the mould network, and hence simulation of the various stages of the moulding cycle. It is this third role which is of interest here and more specifically, the computer simulation of the injection-moulding cycle (as opposed to the compression, transfer and reaction injection-moulding cycles, which will be discussed in Section 5.5). Although it is to the mechanics of the moulding machine itself, as opposed to those of the process, that attention is normally paid, and although machine and process mechanics cannot be separated completely, it is the process mechanics alone that will be discussed here, in so far as this is possible.
