Abstract
This chapter is concerned with rubbery polymers in which the major proportion of the repeat units is derived from butadiene, and which are intended to be vulcanised by conventional means before product application. We commence with a study of the type which over the years has comprised by far the largest proportion of the general-purpose synthetic rubbers which have been produced, namely, the emulsion-polymerised styrene—butadiene rubbers. We proceed then to consider the emulsion-polymerised acrylonitrile—butadiene rubbers, and rubbery terpolymers of styrene, vinyl pyridines and butadiene produced by emulsion polymerisation. We then consider the rubbery polybutadienes and styrene—butadiene copolymers which are produced by solution polymerisation. Consideration of solution-polymerised styrene—butadiene block copolymers intended for application as thermoplastic rubbers will be deferred until a later chapter (Chapter 10). This chapter concludes with a brief description of an unusual and interesting type of polybutadiene known as an ‘Alfin’ rubber.
